JONATHAN AUSTMAN

Jonathan has been practicing yoga for over 30 years and teaching for more than 15. Inspired by his continuing practice of Ashtanga yoga, he approaches teaching as an act of service; working patiently, compassionately, and respectfully with each student and their needs. Jonathan seeks to make the practice methods of Ashtanga yoga accessible to all and sees a disciplined and focused yoga practice as being integral to robust health and a well balanced and happy life. Students find his well-informed and direct method of teaching both challenging and rewarding.

Over the years Jonathan has studied intensively with many of North America’s most senior teachers, most notably Richard Freeman. He lived and worked at the Kripalu Center for Yoga for almost 3 years. He is particularly thankful for the time he spent practicing under the guidance of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and Shri R. Sharath Jois in Mysore, India.

LORI NEUFELD

Lori is a practitioner and instructor of Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga. Having practiced many styles of yoga in turn, Lori has found unparalleled strength, flexibility and wisdom in the science of Ashtanga. With over 400 hours in teacher training, most recently through Jonathan Austman of the Winnipeg Yoga Shala, Lori follows a path of ongoing study and acceptance. At the heart of her instruction lies the humility and patience developed through the challenges of daily practice.

SHIVAUN BERG

Shivaun began practicing Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga in 2004 while living in North Carolina. After returning to the wide, open space of the prairies, she completed the Yoga Teacher Training course with Jonathan Austman at the Winnipeg Yoga Shala. Teaching yoga classes and workshops for adults and children has become a natural extension to her personal practice; within both are lessons in compassion and acceptance. Shivaun sincerely appreciates the patience and good humour of her own teachers, in particular, Jonathan Austman and Nancy Kimberly, and continues to seek out opportunities to deepen her understanding and practice of yoga.

LIA KRUGER

Lia began practicing yoga in 1999, while living and working as a wildlife biologist on the West Coast of the United States. She traveled to India for her first time in 2003 and completed Ashtanga Teacher Training Certification Program with her teacher Masterji Vishwanath.  Upon returning from India, she moved back to Winnipeg and she began teaching ashtanga yoga while taking an additional two-year yoga teacher training certification course with the Yoga Centre Winnipeg.  She continues to return to India to study with her teacher. Her teaching has been influenced by several teachers including, her teacher M.S.Vishwanath, Hart Lazer and Jan Debenham, Fiona Stang and Ramanand Patel, Jonathan Austman and Mark Darby.

ALANA LAJOIE-O'MALLEY

Alana has been a student of yoga since 2001 and of Sanskrit since 2007. The completion of Jonathan Austman’s teacher training course in 2006 established her commitment to the in-depth study of India’s traditional yoga systems. On a Rhodes Scholarship she attended graduate school at the University of Oxford to begin intensive Sanskrit study, along with the study of history and philosophy of yoga, Indian knowledge systems, and Indian astronomy. Alana has had the privilege of travelling to Mysore, India twice to practice at the K. Pattabhi Jois Research Institute and to study traditional yoga and astronomy texts with Sanskrit scholars. Her daily practice is informed by the lessons she gleans from these texts, as well as by her many teachers - most notably Jonathan Austman, Bella Galt, Emanuele Rossi, Shri R. Sharath, and Saraswathi Rangswamy.

ADRIENNE SHUM

Adrienne’s first yoga class was in her living room from a VHS tape borrowed from the library when she was 11. When she went to bed that night she fell asleep immediately, and thereafter realized there was something special about yoga. About a decade later, she committed herself to a daily practice and is grateful for its effects manifesting in all aspects of life. She completed her Moksha teacher training in July 2009, and the Winnipeg Yoga Shala's Ashtanga teacher training program in May 2011. She enjoys breathing, cooking, eating, and getting blissful nights of sleep. Adrienne is honoured to be a part of the Winnipeg Yoga Shala community, and is grateful for her teachers, particularly Jonathan Austman, Darcy Hagerman, and David Robson. Adrienne is currently working towards certification as an Ayurvedic Lifestyle Counselor.

ANDREA MADISON

Andrea has been a student of Ashtanga since 2003, and because of her extraordinary teachers-Tara Beckta, Lia Kruger, and Jonathan Austman- found herself inspired to join in their work with the hope that she could also convey the benefits of yoga.  In 2009, Andrea began learning to teach by training with David Swenson, followed by training with Jonathan Austman in 2010-2011.  Through teaching, Andrea endeavours to share the lessons she continually learns from students, teachers, and most importantly, her own dedicated practice.
