One of the biggest misconceptions about Mysore practice is that it is for advanced students only. Nothing could be further from the truth! Beginner or totally new to yoga you are welcomed and encouraged to begin learning yoga in this way. The basic foundations of practice are taught from day one to new students and a sense of connection with the spirit and integrity of Mysore practice is quickly realized.

What can I expect in a Mysore class?
In Mysore class you’ll hear the sound of people breathing and moving through their practices. Occasional grunts, gasps, sighs and clunks interrupt the steady sounds of on-going practice. You will sense the depth and focus of the efforts being undertaken there. Sometimes there are tears. Sometimes laughter. If you are there at 7:00am you will hear the sound of yourself chanting! You’ll see others in the midst of practicing their set of postures, some more advanced and some less so. You’ll see the teacher moving about and working individually with students. You may hear little bits of conversation as instructions are given and questions are asked. When the teacher is giving you instructions or assists you will have their full attention and support. A sense of wellbeing and confidence is tangible in the rarified atmosphere of the Mysore room. Mysore class is a community that will support, inspire and deepen your yoga practice.

Do I have to be fit and flexible to learn Ashtanga yoga?
If you can breathe, you can do yoga. Your age or fitness-level doesn’t matter when you begin. Just come as you are. Through the practice of Ashtanga yoga, you will develop the strength, endurance and flexibility you need to be fit and healthy. The practice will be adapted to your present condition and needs and you will be moved progressively through the practice at a rate that is suitable for you. How will I know what postures to do?

The same sequence is repeated each day with new postures and refinements introduced and added as your ability with practice increases. Sporadic and inconsistent attendance usually leads to frustration and disillusionment because of not remembering what to do. Again all you need do is show up.

Is Ashtanga yoga done in a hot room?
No, unlike Hot Yoga, which tries to simulate the climactic conditions of southern India, the heat and sweat of Ashtanga yoga is generated internally, by you, through the continuous flow of the postures and breathing as you practice. The Mysore room is kept warm and comfortable.
